Mum obtained a chemistry degree when it was relatively unusual for women to go to university. But after having two children she worked for only a short while in the early days before becoming a full-time housewife and mum. Once she drove her ancient Austin Allegro from Sandhurst to Scotland at her usual sedate pace, and puzzled us all afterwards by asking "what does that traffic sign eleven T mean?"
